Orvis Alba Flyfishers
2008
Alba Flyfishers, Paul Garner and James Gardiner represented Scotland at this years Spring International at Lough Melvin in Ireland. Following 3 practice days, one of which saw James land 12 counting fish, the fishing on match day was very challenging indeed with only 5 fish seperating all four home countries. Wales won Gold with 20 fish and Scotland were squeezed into third spot with 18.

Alba Flyfishers, David Bonnington and I represented Scotland in the Autumn International match held at Lyn Trawsfynydd in North Wales. The match was won by England on a technicality; A Welsh angler failed to register and weigh-in a Brown Trout which would have won the Welsh team Gold. England did however catch more fish than any other team so in my opinion do deserve the top award.
With the top 5 Scots re-qualifying for next year's International Team, providing they finish in the top 20 overall, Davie finished in 5th position, however failed to re-qualify by 2oz as he finished in 21st position overall, following a tie for 19th place, which was very disappointing. I fortunately managed to sneak in and will hopefully fish the Spring International at Chew Valley Lake near Bristol.
England – 41 Fish for 65lbs 12oz
Wales – 39 Fish for 65lbs 5oz
Scotland – 31 Fish for 49lbs 7oz
Ireland – 26 Fish for 40lbs 14oz

Scotland International Flyfishing Team September 2008

Into a Fish on a blustery Rutland Water in the Lexus Int Final.
The Lexus European Open International Final was fished over 2 days at Rutland Water and following 2 practice days we were pretty confident in our approach to the match. After day 1 we had 34 fish and were well in contention, only 7 fish off the lead. Day 2 however proved much tougher and with only 20 trout, we slipped down to 12th position overall. We were all very disappointed with the result and having finished 19 fish behind the leaders, really need to fulfil our potential if we are to compete at the highest level. With the best anglers in the country, these competitions are always won and lost on crutial decisions and maybe a wee bit of luck. The team remains very much up-beat and hopefully next year we can come up with a slightly more effective game plan and that most important ingredient, an extra bit of luck. In my opinion it would be no surprise if we were to win a major event in the next couple of years.
